What to know before applying.
The safest and most useful volunteer experience begins with clear expectations, appropriate screening, and a role shaped by current family and program needs.
What kinds of volunteer opportunities are available? CONFIRMED DIRECTION
Opportunities may include workshops, panels, translation, childcare and family activities, youth mentoring, job-search assistance, event support, supply drives, and other needs identified by families and staff.
How much time do I need to commit? APPROVAL NEEDED
Recommended policy: commitments should vary by role. Some opportunities may be one-time events, while mentoring or direct-support roles may require a consistent schedule. POH should confirm the expected duration before a volunteer accepts a role.
Is there a minimum age to volunteer? APPROVAL NEEDED
Recommended policy: most independent volunteer roles should be limited to adults age 18 or older. Youth participation may be considered through an approved school, family, or group activity with appropriate adult supervision and written guardian permission.
Will I need a background check? APPROVAL NEEDED
Recommended policy: screening should depend on the role. Any volunteer with direct, recurring, or unsupervised contact with children or families may be required to complete identity verification, references, and a background check before beginning.
Do volunteers receive training? APPROVAL NEEDED
Recommended policy: every volunteer should receive a role briefing. Volunteers working directly with families should also receive guidance about confidentiality, boundaries, cultural humility, safety, reporting concerns, and who to contact for help.
Can a company, school, or community group volunteer together? CONFIRMED DIRECTION
Yes. Groups may support Family Saturdays, events, supply drives, workshops, or special projects. POH should confirm the activity, group size, age range, timing, and staff capacity in advance.
Can I propose my own workshop or project? RECOMMENDED POLICY
Yes. POH welcomes ideas, especially when they respond to interests families have identified. Submitting an idea does not guarantee that it will be scheduled; staff must first confirm fit, timing, and capacity.
Will my expenses be reimbursed? APPROVAL NEEDED
Recommended policy: volunteers should not assume reimbursement. Any purchase or reimbursable expense must receive written approval from an authorized POH staff member before money is spent.
May I photograph families or post about volunteering? APPROVAL NEEDED
Recommended policy: no volunteer should photograph, record, identify, or post about a family or child without explicit POH authorization and the organization’s required consent. Confidential information must not be shared.
Does completing the form guarantee a volunteer placement? RECOMMENDED POLICY
No. POH should match volunteers to current family needs, program schedules, supervision capacity, and role requirements. The team may keep an application for future opportunities.
